My Airstream Style

The Airstream:

An almost completely refurbished 1966 Trade Wind, and a gutted 1956 Overlander—California wide body, 13-panel front and whale tail—gutted and ready to start work on.

The Airstreamer:

Elizabeth Jose, New Mexico

My Airstream style:

I have a love affair with the big landscapes of the southwest, particularly rocky ones on a massive scale, like Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon and Arches National Park in Utah. I can think of nothing more wonderful than seeing them reflected off the mirror shine of a vintage Airstream. I can’t tell you exactly why it excites me so much, it just does.

Travel partner:

Elizabeth and Ray

My partner in crime (or shine) is my lovely boyfriend, Ray. It doesn’t hurt that he’s just as nuts about Airstreams as I am and has been a mechanic all his adult life and can fix anything. We work as a team very well and we travel well together too. I feel very lucky!

Camper or glamper?

glampingDefinitely a glamper in terms of creature comforts. Memory foam mattress, high thread count sheets, great coffee, and an ever-changing view out of the window. A state park campground with hookups in hot weather for the air conditioning—otherwise, boondocking on National Forest land at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon was a big high spot for me in 2015. A table top barbecue on the picnic table, a mosquito candle, comfy camping chair under the awning, a gin and tonic, and I’m good.

Must-have item:

iPhone, with camera, Google maps, and RV Parky app—but mostly the camera.

The ideal Airstream day:

If it’s a travel day, not too far to go, some great things to see and stop at on the way, lots of time to stop and take photos of some stunning scenery. Otherwise, an amazing National Park or scenic spot, get up early to catch the morning light, some hiking, good food, maybe a nap in the afternoon and then sunset somewhere pretty.
