Panoramic mountain views and proximity to dynamic Telluride give Matterhorn wide appeal. “This is a very scenic campground, with sites to accommodate anything from tents to large RVs,” says Campendium reviewer Life’s Little Adventures. “We were pleasantly surprised that the main restroom building has free hot showers. There is a trail by the outhouse that leads to a dirt road going to Priest Lake and Trout Lake that makes for a nice hike.”
Reviewer Rich Travels said that, “The camp manager/host was extremely friendly and helpful. We had great views of the mountains.” Rich Travels reaffirmed the niceties of the showers referenced above. Rich also said, “Roads were wide for traveling through the campground for a big rig. We enjoyed our stay here.”
Nosh Bus had a fine time as well. “We had 50 Amp service along with water and sewer. Site 7 is really nice without any neighbors nearby. The camp host are really awesome too.” They were there for a Telluride Brews and Blues festival (lucky!), so the campground’s location was a boon. “There is no campground in Telluride for 30’+ rigs so this made a great home base.” They also suggested driving into Mountain Village (free parking) and taking the gondola over to Telluride.
There were a few cautions amidst the praise. One reviewer suggested bringing a cell booster if you want to be connected to the Net. The Campendium connection indicators did suggest that connectivity would be sporadic without some device assistance.
Two reviewers mentioned that there was some road noise, although one declared that it was very quiet at night. Full hookup sites are bunched together, if that cramps your style.
The sites have fire rings, picnic tables, water and for those with hookups, 50-, 30- and 20-amp connections. Pets are OK.
To get to the campground from Telluride, travel west 3 miles to Highway 145. Turn left and travel south for 8 miles. The campground is on the left side of the highway.
Enjoy that mountain air!
