“If I could give this site more than 5 stars I would. We loved everything about this spot,” wrote Campendium reviewer WatsonsWander about Black Canyon North. “From the 360-degree views, to the solitude, the amazing variety of interesting plants, the endless opportunities for exploring, the close proximity to a campground with water and a dump station, and the excellent price of FREE, it really doesn’t get much better than this. Oh…and did I mention the blazing fast Verizon signal? Yeah, pretty much perfect in every way.”
Located in Essex, California—about three and a half hours east of Los Angeles, and two hours south of Las Vegas—Black Canyon North “provides serenity and solitude from major metropolitan areas,” states the Mojave parks website. Fun fact: At 1.6 million acres, Mojave National Preserve is the third largest National Park Service area outside of Alaska. (Death Valley National Park and Yellowstone National Park rank first and second.)
“The only potential issue with this site is the size,” advises WatsonsWander. “It is listed as suitable for ‘small RVs only’ for good reason. The access road is a bit narrow and lined with potential RV-scratching plants. And if you do make it down the road be prepared for an oval area only just big enough to make a u-turn with our 25-foot trailer. The good news is that there’s a large pull-off at the start of the access road with plenty of room to park the rig and scout on foot.”
Hole-in-the-Wall campground, a few miles down the road, “makes for a good back-up plan.” The area is remote, very far from gas stations and grocery stores. “Be prepared and bring more than you think you’ll need, because you will want to stay longer!”
As always, check for park alerts before you visit, especially when venturing to more extreme locations. Water system shutdowns and road closures may be in effect.
